Abstract: Some preliminary results of laser sounding of the Earth surface (the ocean and the continent) and cloud fields obtained from the first Russian spaceborne lidar BALKAN in 1995 and 1996 are discussed in the paper. The measurements were made in various regions of the Earth under various light and shadow conditions for two orientation modes of the space station «Mir».
