Abstract:
We describe the most important events of the space era, the success of manned  cosmonautics and outstanding discoveries obtained by the specialized spacecrafts and space observatories  from 1957 till 2000. A separate section is devoted to the status and prospects of  a space industry of Ukraine. The paper has been written in the encyclopedic style as well as fully illustrated.
Keywords: space materials and technology; history of astronautics; space astronomy and biology
