Models of the geomagnetic field and characteristics of magnetic storms

Abstract: The results of our modelling calculation of the Earth's magnetic field during the magnetic storms on 7–8 November 2004 (Dst = = –370 nT), 15 May 1997 (Dst = –115 nT) and during the small storm on 15 July 1997 (Dst = –51 nT) are presented. The model of magnetic field of the inner magnetosphere current systems (Tsyganenko T02) placed in the Internet is used. An attempt is made to reveal some features of global distribution of geomagnetic field in space. We estimated the contributions of the fields from external current sources, namely, ring current, magnetotail current, Birkeland currents, and fields of a dipole to general modelling magnetic field during magnetic storms. The calculated values of the fields on the Earth's surface are compared with the Dst values measured at a number of ground stations and with SYM indexes.
