Abstract:
A spectrum of MHD eigenperturbations of magnetospheric plasma is analysed. Toroidal Alfven and ionosonic modes are shown to be main eigenmodes for a system with "rigid" boundary conditions on the ionosphere in the case of low pressure. As the pressure increases, poloidal Alfven modes are generated in the magnetospheric plasma. Certain relations between the value of the pressure and its profile make them unstable. In this case one can refer to them as to unstable ballooning modes. The boundary conditions strongly affect the spectrum of the eigenperturbations in the magnetospheric plasma.
Keywords: inner Earth's magnetosphere, MHD eigenperturbations, «warm» plasma
